Module 4: Learning Through the Creative Arts
Quality Education

This module celebrates the creative spirit of those in the Eastern Caribbean and how it can be captured as part of learning in any of the core primary subjects.  Participants will explore the learning opportunities that can be created by using Creative Arts as an integral component of teaching core primary subjects and will develop lessons that incorporate the music, movement, dance, visual arts, and drama of the region into language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies.  Participants will learn through explicit exploration how the incorporation of the Creative Arts can support the acquisition and application of the knowledge, skills, values, and competencies described in the OECS Curriculum and Assessment Framework. A purpose of the module is to provide practical, job-embedded professional learning that will support quality teaching and learning critical to the implementation of the OECS Harmonized Primary Curriculum (OHPC) Using the OHPC, participants will develop lessons that are designed to elicit quality learning through inclusive learning and assessment strategies that incorporate music, movement and dance, visual arts and drama and enhance student engagement, active learning, critical thinking and the gradual release of responsibility to learners. Participants will consider the importance of context, particularly local context, to student learning and how to link lessons to learners’ homes and communities in a manner that celebrates local culture as part of the learning process. Participants will use the draft guiding OECS Harmonized Primary Curriculum (OHPC) to support lesson planning that emphasizes the Creative Arts. They will be encouraged to develop lessons that involve outcomes from more than one subject as part of the learning experience.  As part of this Module, participants will have the opportunity to further explore the OHPC and to better understand the opportunities that it brings for enhanced teaching and learning.
